We are grateful to Sabine Craft-Giepmans of the RKD for her help in confirming the attribution of painting as by Nason. The date is likely to be 1661, painted three years before the superb 'Portrait of a Man with a Skull' (illustrated here) and now in the Dulwich Picture Gallery, as well as the 'Portrait of an unknown Man' in a sale at Sotheby's 9th May 1995, lot 119.
