Essay:

Vedute of Venice's buildings were of particular interest to Borsato, but it was not just the exteriors that he depicted. He also painted important civic events inside the buildings, for example the 'Presentation of the King of Lombardy in the Doge's Palace' (formerly with Rafael Valls) and the 'Commemoration of Antonio Canova at the Scuola Grande della Carità' (Museo d'Arte Moderna, Ca'Pesaro). His lively depictions of Venetian life, be it inside or out can be characterised, just like this painting, by vibrant colours and atmospheric and noisy activities.
